Award adds approximately $560,000 in subsidies
RENO, Nev.— The Reno Housing Authority (RHA) will house 52 additional veterans with the new 2024 US Department of Housing and Urban Development-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) voucher award. The HUD-VASH program combines HUD’s Housing Choice Voucher rental assistance for homeless veterans with case management provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Using RHA’s current average rental subsidy, this is approximately $560,000 annually in additional subsidies to our community.
Through referrals from the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System (VASNHCS), RHA will house 52 homeless veterans and their families.
“With the collaboration between the Reno Housing Authority and the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System, more veterans will have a place to call home,” Executive Director Hilary Lopez, Ph.D., said. “We appreciate HUD and the VA’s continued support of our community’s vulnerable veterans through the HUD-VASH voucher program.”
According to HUD-VASH program reporting, between 2008-2023, the RHA has received 541 vouchers. HUD awards HUD-VASH vouchers based on geographic need to Public Housing Authorities who demonstrate interest and meet leasing capacity criteria that ensures communities with the greatest need will also house homeless veterans and their families promptly.
