The season of giving is in full swing and Reno Housing Authority families are reaping the benefits. The RHA ski program is gearing up with help from Sky Tavern Junior Ski Program and BOBO’s Ski Board and Patio. The local shop has been around more than 50 years and for at least 30 of those, has donated ski and board gear to low-income youth supported by the Reno Housing Authority. Sky Tavern provides RHA 150 scholarships to get families on the mountain.
Nearly 150 kids and parents who live in public housing or receive housing assistance through RHA are able to learn to ski or snowboard this winter thanks in part to BOBO’s. Renting boards and skis, and all the clothing and safety gear, can be a large barrier for low-income families, but Bobo’s co-owner Mary Weneta said she and her staff are pleased to help.
“We’ve partnered with RHA for decades and love helping young people experience the joy of being outdoors and on the mountains,” Weneta said.
RHA Executive Director Dr. Hilary Lopez is excited to bring this opportunity to the organization’s families. “RHA’s partnership with BOBO’s allows us to provide our residents with important family experiences,” she said. “It fosters lifelong memories that our families will cherish for years to come.”
Through the RHA’s partnership with BOBO’s and the Sky Tavern Junior Ski Program, and many other outreach programs, low-income youth throughout Washoe County have lower barriers to family experiences.
