Low- to No-Cost Food Pantry Opens at RHA Public Housing Site

The Reno Housing Authority is proud to announce the grand opening of the Golden Groceries Food Pantry, open to all RHA residents and community members 55 years or older. The timing of this low to no-cost food pantry is paramount as several Covid-19 economic relief benefits come to an end, increasing cost of living nationwide with a substantial impact on seniors.

Golden Groceries is conveniently located at Tom Sawyer Village, one of RHA’s eight low-income public housing sites. All 100 units there are dedicated to seniors and persons with disabilities. Also, within a one-mile radius, RHA’s other properties serve an additional 200 senior households. The Volunteers of America site is also within walking distance to the new pantry, serving an additional 186 senior households.

“Having an on-site food pantry will provide our residents easily accessible, healthy food at low or no costs,” says RHA Executive Director Dr. Hilary Lopez. “We’re proud to be one more agency fighting hunger in our community.”

Golden Groceries Food Pantry is made possible thanks in part to RHA’s generous community partners.

“We are excited to see another Golden Grocery pantry in the community,” said Jocelyn Lantrip, director of marketing for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. “We appreciate our partnership with RHA, and all of the ways that we can provide nutritious food to seniors at convenient locations.”

Food Bank of Northern Nevada provided equipment for the pantry and operational training for RHA staff. Greater Nevada Credit Union donated $1,500 to purchase food and resupply the pantry as needed.“

“At Greater Nevada Credit Union, we believe in empowering communities through financial wellness,” said Michelle Hale, GNCU’s community outreach manager. “We are thrilled to contribute $1,500 toward RHA’s Golden Groceries Food Pantry, because caring for our seniors is not just a commitment, it is a heartfelt investment in their well-being.”

Sometimes, home is more than just a roof over one’s head, but also fresh food and a warm meal. Providing healthy, easily accessible food is just one more way RHA supports residents. The organization remains dedicated to providing nearly 9,000 Nevadans annually a safe, secure place to call home.
